Partitioning My Hard Drive? - Ubuntu Installer Keeps Freezing
The reason I posted this in Windows category is because It's probably different on all operating systems.

I've gone through several pages of Google with little success. They all say part of my HD needs to be "unallocated", but none of mine is.

I plan on installing Ubuntu, but I obviously don't want to overwrite Windows.

RE: Partitioning My Hard Drive?
1. Start
2. Right click on computer, click on manage
3. In the left, click "Disk Management" (This will take awhile to load)
4. Right click on your main drive (C:) and click "Shrink volume" Put in the amount of megabytes you want to shrink it (How big you want ubuntu to have) (10000 = 10gb) this process might take some time.
5. Now you will see "Unallocated space" right click it and click "New volume" type in what you put before. You can set it to NTFS (Worked for me) This will take some time

Congrats, you just made a new partition :)

All of what Predator said is correct, EXCEPT for this:
Quote:5. Now you will see "Unallocated space" right click it and click "New volume" type in what you put before. You can set it to NTFS (Worked for me) This will take some time

You don't want to create a partition, since Ubuntu will do it for you, and you don't/shouldn't set it to NTFS, it should be formatted to Ext4.

You won't have unallocated space Ghoster unless you shrink your hard drive to allow for Unallocated space. There's a video on this that I created quite a few months back.

Back in the day when I was an active member of a very crappy forum, my username was still "Infinity", and I still ran Vista.

RE: Partitioning My Hard Drive?
It doesn't really matter, you can select the partition or unallocated space while installing ubuntu.

Oh and ace, your video is copyrighted in the US xD

Oh, it will? Well then. No need to partition then. I didn't know it would. I will refer back to this thread if I need to partition my disk for any reason, then.

No lol, sorry, understand that what I meant by that, was that you need UNALLOCATED space, but you don't need to partition it right away. (Meaning you don't need to create or partition that unallocated space into a volume immediately.) That unallocated space will be formatted to what you want to format it to to run Ubuntu, during the Ubuntu install.

So how do I get the unallocated space again? By shrinking?

Yeah, there's a tool on your Windows machine called Disk Management if you run Vista or Win7 that will do it for you, but you have to shrink your hard drive to allow for unallocated space before you can even turn something into a new volume or partition.

Free up some space.
