RE: Project ideas?
We're limited to the "classic" design, so it has the nice Win95 feeling. :P

And I don't know anything about "why". I'm just a computer monkey fixing user problems. If I had anything to say when decisions are made, things would drastically change within a few weeks...
But I can say this: There are no "pros". None. It's laziness, based on the saying "never touch a running system". However soon XP and Java 6 will NOT run anymore. We're still using Office XP. It's OLD. We can't even open or create .docx files properly and all externals are complaining about it. Want to know the reason why? Because our superior doesn't like the new Office layout.

Now you can probably guess why we're not on Win7 about 5 years after it was released. Same for Java.
*deep breath*

Other than that I'd guess our software supplier started out with Java to support multiple platforms, and didn't feel the need to move on.

RE: Project ideas?
Welcome back!

I am a more "newer" guy, registered when you were inactive, I think.

And you want to study in Germany, do you know the language, or it's English?

Probably, first you'll need a few algorythms to study. Have you thought about following some free online courses?

My studies will be in English of course, and i will take the "TOEFL" exam next week.
As for German i know just a little from high school,Wie Heist Du? My name ist Sam ich komme auch Agypten, Is that correct? lol
So i will definitely need to take a basic course in German just for basic communications.

RE: Project ideas?
Why am I not doing my own thing? I've not gained any graduation that would allow me to start a business in Germany yet. I'd love to maybe get into game development at some point in my life - but education comes first, even though it involves learning C (not even C++) at the speed of a snail climbing a skyscraper.

Two more years dealing with this [bleep] work place and school, then I'll be done with my apprenticeship/internship/job/school thing (you don't have such things in the states) and will be eligible to start my own business. Maybe I'll move to the states for a while, loved it when I was there last month. Got a little sick of Germany after living here my entire life :)

//Edit:
Yeah that won't get you too far I guess :P I'll not go over German grammar here. Too much to explain!

Other than that I'd guess our software supplier started out with Java to support multiple platforms, and didn't feel the need to move on.

Newer Microsoft Office editions didn't just change the file extension to force people to upgrade to the newer standards, it was for:

1. Backwards compatibility between doc and docx with the newer editions of office being capable of opening both
2. Security reasons... The old doc format has many vulnerabilities, and thus they came out with a new archived file format (docx) which is really just a compressed system of data files and config files that are decompressed and parsed by the program. I know this because I've had to open up a docx file without any software before. :)

There are reasons not to upgrade to the latest greatest, but there are again reasons to do so. In this case XP is well outdated, and I think you should be required to upgrade a bit.

RE: Project ideas?
@Mazzn Yup, i know that lol thats why i will make sure to take my classes in English, any good recommendation for good yet affordable college in Germany? preferably cologne.

@Ace seeing how he described his workplace i doubt they will do that unless they get a severe security breach.
hmmm wait a sec...Mazzn are you thinking what i'm thinking? :D

RE: Project ideas?
Oh, I'm definitely not complaining about .docx :)

Neither am I saying we should buy the latest software, Vista has been a prime example of why you shouldn't, but I think Windows 7 has been proven to be a pretty solid OS by now, and now even Microsoft is telling us (not just because of money!) to switch to something that's newer than XP, yet nobody cares to even think about it. And it's the same for Office... Sadly.

@Hell Guardian
No clue what's around Cologne to be honest. And we don't have college like you do! Then again I guess we do have a similar type of school... And education is mostly paid for by tax money. If you're thinking about going to university it usually costs a small fee for administration per semester.

Game design however was about 32 000€ the last time I checked, which is why I'm not doing that right now...

Either way education is pretty cheap if you're not looking for exotic stuff.

...Oh, about security breaches, please don't even think about it. If something happens I'll probably have to clean up afterwards! :P

RE: Project ideas?
I visited someone in a small town in Minnesota, and I was in Minneapolis/St. Paul with them for three days.

We also went on a one week long trip: Branson and Springfield MO, Smyrna TN (watched the Blue Angels air show there! Amazing stuff.) and - uhm - somewhere in St. Croix WI.

...Plus an emergency landing due to passenger sickness somewhere between Tennessee and Wisconsin. Which is impressive considering we were 2 1/2 pilots (me being a glider pilot in training) and just one passenger ;)
