Antivirus working properly? [Test]
Here's a simple method to test most AV's for proper functionality. You should be able to check if it's responding properly by this one simple solution below:

Copy this into a notepad editor:
Code:
X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

Before saving it, make sure that the file is exactly 68 bytes in size, it should be by default since the text is exactly 68 characters long and contains only printable ASCII encoded characters.

Save, and before too long you'll notice a virus warning. I actually ran a few tests, and Microsoft Security Essentials was the quickest to respond to the file. That proves one thing for performance on that little tool by Microsoft, Bitdefender seemed to have almost an instant reaction as well.

I typed this out into Notepad++ and it almost hung the application as soon as I pressed the save button lol. It was unresponsive for maybe 2 seconds before the text file was deleted from my desktop by the AV.

I did this a few months back for Avast. Same thing, the very second I saved it, it was gone. It's definitely a good way to check if your AV is working, if you think it's being stopped by something.

I would agree, I have had this saved in one of my locked away archives for my external and forgot it was there.

What is it about this that makes AV's go crazy?

I've always wondered the same. Looks like random characters with a title to me.

There's nothing malicious about this, it's just that most of the top AV's have EICAR inputted into their malicious string databases for tech-savy AV testers/debuggers. Something to do with sponsorship or something like that as well.

It will come up with a pretty obvious detection message too, usually with something like: "EICAR test virus"

With BitDefender, it comes up with something like "EICAR test virus (not a virus)"

Wow that is pretty useful lol. But I scanned it with Malwarebytes and found nothing :( Do you have to save it as a text file?

I wouldn't think so, but you should try. Note though, that it will only work from AV's that are sponsored by EICAR and have it in their search databases for malicious detections. It's not malicious, it's just meant to be used as a test to make sure that your AV is scanning contents of files properly and that they aren't corrupt in any way.
